The CSCS card maze, explained in plain English

21 July 2026 · 4 min read

Course, test, card, application. Four different things that people assume are one. Here is the order they go in and what each one costs you.

If you have ever tried to work out how to get a CSCS card from the internet alone, you will know it is harder than it should be. Here is the whole thing, in order. ## 1. The qualification For a Green Labourer Card, you need the Level 1 Award in Health & Safety in a Construction Environment. That is a one-day course with a short paper at the end. This is the bit we run every Friday. ## 2. The CITB HS&E test A separate, computer-based exam sat at an approved test centre. It is not the same as the course, and passing the course does not pass the test. This catches out more people than anything else on this page. ## 3. The card application Once you hold both, you apply to CSCS for the card itself. There is an application fee, and the card arrives digitally in the MyCSCS app before the physical one lands. ## 4. Which card you actually need Green is the labourer card. If you hold a relevant NVQ or an apprenticeship, you may be entitled to a Blue, Gold or Black card instead, which is worth checking before you pay for anything, because the route is different. ## Doing it in one day Our premium package puts the first two into a single day: the course and the test after lunch at the centre across the road, the card application submitted for you within three days of your pass. That is the whole reason it exists. If you are unsure which card applies to you, ring Kevin on 01482 765731. It is a five-minute conversation and it will save you booking the wrong thing.
